We have had an interesting week. We had some new terms this week. These terms are shown below.
Track: When companies collect information about you based on your online behavior.
Target: When companies tailor content to you based on the information they have collected about you.
Demographic: Common categories of the population, such as age, gender, and race.
Cookies: Data files are stored on your computer when you visit certain sites, they are often used by companies to identify repeat customers and personalize visitors' experiences.
Pop-ups: A type of window that appears on top of (over) the browser window of a Web site that a user has visited. In contrast to a pop-under ad, which appears behind (in back of) the browser window, a pop-up is more obtrusive as it covers other windows, particularly the window that the user is trying to read. Pop-ups ads are used extensively in advertising on the Web, though advertising is not the only application for pop-up windows.
We learned about how companies can and will track what you do on the internet. Every time you get on the internet, they look at what you search on Google or Bing, and take those interests and use them to their advantage. When Pop-ups occur on your screen, they are most likely about what you like, and things you would buy. Companies like that look at you age, gender, and race to determine what ads to show you. All this is mostly about money, companies just wanting to make you buy things.
Personally I think it is not very fair. So from my understanding, I can't enjoy my time on my computer because you want to make money. Yes, ads are very annoying, but it is only because of your search history. There is one upside to this. When you search things, companies look at what you searched before to compare. This allows you search results to decrease. Although, some people may thing that is a bad thing. I personally think it is a great thing. No one likes to have thousands of pages to go through to find what you want. This affects me because I use the internet a lot. So when I go on the internet I have to expect ads popping up everywhere. Below is a video about tracking and targeting online.
Ways To Shorten Your Search Results:
1. Use key words.
2. Do not provide your email address to different websites.
3. Unsubscribe from websites.
4. Avoid "too good to be true" product deals, and opportunities.
5. Use antivirus software.
6. Disable Internet cookies.
